Review content:

The Japanese car Toyota Avensis has been known for many years; the first generation was introduced back in 1997. Then the car was presented in three body styles: sedan, liftback and station wagon. The latest generation of Toyota Avensis is presented in two versions: sedan and station wagon, which is what we will consider in the article.

Rumors about the discontinuation of Toyota Avensis have been circulating in the media for several days. Initially, they wanted to suspend production in 2015, but then they introduced a new generation. The next date was set for 2017, but the beginning of the year showed that there are no plans to discontinue the model yet, as new Toyota Avensis sedans and station wagons have been delivered to dealerships. According to one of the company's representatives, Didier Leroy, by 2020, all Toyota car models will have hybrid versions. But he also said that in 2018, sales of Toyota Avensis station wagons and sedans will stop in Europe.

The design of the new Toyota Avensis cars is in many ways similar to the new Toyota Corolla model, but the parameters and characteristics are different. Now let’s look at and compare what’s new and how the latest generation of Toyota Avensis differs. Having reviewed the generations, and there were only four of them, including the last one, we can say for sure that with each release the model completely changed its body features.

Exterior of the new Toyota Avensis 2016

Externally, the new Toyota Avensis is indeed somewhat similar to the Toyota Corolla, only slightly larger in size. The front optics are not at all similar to the previous generation Toyota Avensis 2007; they are based on LED and halogen technology. The upper part is decorated with LED daytime running lights. LED turns are located closer to the middle, and the main light is based on halogen lamps (for the Toyota Avensis Mid+ and Premium trim levels, the optics will be completely LED).

The center of the front of the new Toyota Avensis is occupied by a small radiator grille with the company logo. The pseudo-grille, as many have dubbed it, consists of two chrome strips from the emblem and small gaps for airflow to the engine. This is more likely a decorative grille for a Toyota Avensis than for engine airflow.

For all Toyota Avensis trim levels, without exception, the grille will be black with chrome inserts. The front bumper will be painted in body color; its central part is decorated with a real grille for blowing the engine. Additional holes were placed on the sides of the Toyota Avensis bumper, more likely for aerodynamics than for engine airflow. On the right and left of the Toyota Avensis bumper there are LED fog lights.

If we take the previous generation Toyota Avensis 2007 for comparison, we can confidently say that the front part has completely changed. The front optics, radiator grille and front bumper in the Toyota Avensis 2016 are completely new. If the front changed its shape quite significantly, then the hood received minimal changes; it remained almost the same as in the previous generation of Toyota Avensis.

In the center, the hood is slightly raised, repeating the shape of the radiator grille, but the side parts with sharp ends remain the same. The Toyota Avensis 2016 sedan and station wagon were made identical at the front, without minor differences. At first glance you can’t tell which body is which.

Looking around the side of the 2016 Toyota Avensis, the new features are not as noticeable as the front. We can say that the designers decided to leave the features of the previous Toyota Avensis 2007. The rear-view mirrors are still located on the sides of the door body. The recess at the bottom of the doors was also left the same, even the double front glass on the doors is one to one, as on the previous generation Toyota Avensis 2007.

But still there are changes in the new Toyota Avensis 2016. The first is a turn signal on the side mirrors; in the new generation it is small and located above the middle of the mirror. In the previous generation of Toyota Avensis, the repeater was larger and located at the bottom of the mirror.

The lining near the handles of the new Toyota Avensis has become more expressive. The front and rear optics changed their shape, and as a result, the shape of the side wings also changed. The 2016 Toyota Avensis station wagon received minor changes to the rear wings, in particular this is a strict horizontal line in the area of the C-pillar.

Let's look at the new generation of Toyota Avensis 2016 from behind. For both the sedan and station wagon, the designers decided to make the appearance the same, with the exception of the trunk lid, of course. New rear LED optics are the first thing that distinguishes the Toyota Avensis 2016 from other models. As in the previous generation of Toyota Avensis, the rear optics are located on the body and trunk lid, although the optics do not appear to be divided.

The center of the trunk lid is decorated with the Toyota company logo, from which horizontal chrome stripes extend to the right and left, which of course was not the case in the previous generation Toyota Avensis 2007. On the trunk lid of the new model, below the optics, a semicircular recess has appeared, which well emphasizes the modern shape of the body. In its upper part there is a rear view camera, license plate illumination and a trunk opening handle for the basic configuration of the Toyota Avensis 2016. A characteristic difference above the emblem can be considered the elevation, which plays the role of a spoiler. This can be seen in both the Toyota Avensis station wagon and sedan.

With these body shapes, the dimensions of the new Toyota Avensis 2016 are:

  • Toyota Avensis width - 1810 mm;
  • length in sedan body - 4750 mm;
  • length in a station wagon - 4820 mm;
  • Toyota Avensis height - 1480 mm;
  • The wheelbase is 2700 mm (for sedan and station wagon).
The basic configuration of the Toyota Avensis 2016 will have a solid roof without a panorama and a sunroof. Starting from Toyota Avensis Mid trim levels and higher, a panoramic roof will be included as standard. Depending on the configuration of the Toyota Avensis, the weight of the car ranges from 2000 to 2100 kg.

Based on body color, the new Toyota Avensis 2016 will be available in:

  1. white;
  2. platinum bronze metallic;
  3. dark black metallic;
  4. pearly white;
  5. metallic silver;
  6. dark gray metallic;
  7. granite metallic;
  8. dark steel metallic;
  9. red;
  10. metallic blue.
When choosing a metallic color, the buyer needs to pay an additional 625 euros. On a flat surface, the Toyota Avensis 2016 will be able to turn around in an area with a diameter of 5.4 meters. Regarding the suspension, MacPherson will be installed at the front and a multi-link at the rear. The trunk volume is quite spacious: for a Toyota Avensis sedan it is 509 liters, and for a station wagon - 543 liters. with the rear seats folded down. The basic equipment of the Toyota Avensis 2016 includes 16" branded alloy wheels, the Mid and Mid+ equipment are installed on 17" wheels, and the maximum equipment is installed on 18" wheels.

There is only one conclusion about the latest generation of Toyota Avensis 2016: I would not like this model to be discontinued. Considering the history of production and comparing with the generations of Toyota Avensis 2003 and Toyota Avensis 2004, the new product has gained many fans and a fairly good reputation.

Salon of the new generation Toyota Avensis 2016

Following the appearance of the new Toyota Avensis, the interior was also updated. Not to say that the interior has changed much in comparison with the Toyota Avensis 2007; rather, the shape and features of the instruments have changed, but the purpose remains the same. The basic Toyota Avensis 2016 will be equipped with an audio system with a monochrome display. Starting with the Mid configuration, an 8" color touchscreen display of the multimedia system will be located in the central part. For unknown reasons, the designers of the new Toyota Avensis 2016 decided to recess the display deep into the front panel, and place control buttons and round knobs on the left and right.

Above the display, as in the previous generation Toyota Avensis 2007, there is an air supply and an emergency parking button. Below the multimedia display is a dual-zone climate control panel. This panel also contains buttons for heated glass, side mirrors and seats for the maximum configuration of Toyota Avensis.

Moving below the climate control panel, you will find the passenger seating indicator panel and the passenger airbag indicator. In the maximum configurations of Toyota Avensis, there are controls for heating the front seats. In previous generations, for example, the 2004 Toyota Avensis, there was a large ashtray with a charger and a cigarette lighter here. In the new Toyota Avensis, the ashtray was made very small and hidden under the climate control panel. Charging from USB and 12V was moved to the front armrest located between the front seats. A cup holder and gear knob are located near the armrest.

The Toyota Avensis electromechanical handbrake, as well as the Start/Stop button, are still located between the steering wheel and the central display. The driver's seat will be no less interesting. The instrument panel of the new Toyota Avensis has indeed been completely changed. The central part of the instrument panel is occupied by a 4.2" color display. It displays information about the status of the engine and vehicle.

The instruments of the Toyota Avensis have now acquired a convex cylindrical shape, previously the same were found on Mazda cars. This shape is made for protection from the sun and good viewing at different times of the day. The three-spoke steering wheel has remained almost unchanged, except that control buttons for various systems and the multimedia display of the Toyota Avensis 2016 have been added.

According to the standard, the steering wheel of the Toyota Avensis 2016 has a turn switch, controls for light devices and cruise control. To the left of the steering wheel, the designers have placed a set for adjusting and controlling the side mirrors of the Toyota Avensis, and as many say, it is quite convenient.

Now let's look at the interior of the Toyota Avensis 2016. The seats remained the same shape, except that the headrests became elongated. The rear seats have not changed in shape and are designed to seat three passengers, both in the Toyota Avensis sedan and station wagon. As for the interior upholstery, Toyota Avensis designers did not limit the buyer’s choice. The materials used are good quality fabric and leather, usually in combinations of colors and materials.

In terms of interior shades, the Toyota Avensis 2016 is available in:

  • black and gray fabric;
  • black fabric with gray Alcantara insert;
  • black fabric with golden Alcantara insert;
  • black leather with gray Alcantara insert;
  • black leather with golden Alcantara insert;
  • black leather upholstery, for maximum configuration.
For an additional fee, the buyer of a Toyota Avensis can order interior upholstery to suit their taste and color, but this is only available for the maximum trim level. On a pleasant note, in the interior of the new Toyota Avensis 2016 one can note the presence of wood or polished aluminum inserts around the perimeter of the interior. The basic configuration will include six speakers of the audio system, and the maximum configuration of the Toyota Avensis will be equipped with ten speakers.

To connect gadgets to the Toyota Avensis multimedia system, Bluetooth will be installed, and for those who like to surf the Internet, a Wi-Fi access point and a built-in modem. Toyota Avensis logos will be embroidered on the backs of the front seats. The buyer will also be offered a number of additional accessories, such as pedal covers, more expensive inserts around the perimeter, interior lighting and a full package of electric front seats with memory for the driver's seat of the Toyota Avensis.

In general, the interior of the new Toyota Avensis 2016 turned out to be modern and stylish, despite the fact that plans to discontinue production of the model are gradually being implemented.

Technical characteristics of Toyota Avensis 2016

The variety of engines will delight the buyer of the Toyota Avensis 2016. A total of four different units are available, two petrol and two diesel. Compared with the 2007 Toyota Avensis, the 1.6 liter petrol engine has disappeared. and a 2.2 liter diesel.

For the 2004 Toyota Avensis, two engines were available: diesel and gasoline, 2 liters in volume. Thus, we can say that the variety of engines of the new Toyota Avensis will suit both lovers of fuel economy and lovers of more powerful units.

First, let's look at the gasoline DOHC Valvematic engine of the 2016 Toyota Avensis with 16 valves. The first unit with a volume of 1.8 liters, such a Toyota Avensis engine will be able to produce 147 horses and 180 Nm of torque. The manufacturer offers a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.

The maximum speed of the Toyota Avensis station wagon and sedan, regardless of gearbox, is 200 km/h. As for acceleration to 100 km/h, the figures are slightly different. If the Toyota Avensis is equipped with a manual, then the sedan’s performance is 9.4 seconds, and the station wagon’s is 9.7 seconds. For equipment with automatic transmission, the acceleration to hundreds for the sedan is 10.4 seconds, and for the station wagon 10.7 seconds. The CO2 emissions figure is 138 g/km.

The fuel consumption of Toyota Avensis is quite good. For a sedan this is from 4.9 to 8.1 liters of gasoline, and a station wagon will require from 5.2 to 8.5 liters. These engines will be available for any Toyota Avensis configuration, both with manual and automatic transmission.

The second on the list is a 2 liter petrol unit. I would like to say right away that on the new Toyota Avensis it will be available only in the Mid and Mid+ trim levels, paired with an automatic transmission. Engine power is 152 hp. with a maximum torque of 196 Nm. The maximum speed for a sedan (station wagon) is 205 km/h (200 km/h). The sedan can cover the first hundred in 10 seconds, and the Toyota Avensis station wagon in 10.3 seconds. In terms of fuel consumption, such a unit is a little more voracious. For a sedan these figures range from 5 to 8.4 liters, and for a station wagon from 5.1 to 8.7 liters. Emission of harmful substances - 144 g/km. Despite the volume, this is the most powerful engine in the 2016 Toyota Avensis.

Toyota Avensis diesel engines are weaker than gasoline ones, especially since they are only available paired with a six-speed manual transmission. The 1.6-liter unit produces 112 hp with 270 Nm of maximum torque. For both the Toyota Avensis sedan and station wagon, the maximum speed is 185 km/h. The sedan will accelerate to 100 km/h in 11.4 seconds, and the station wagon in 11.7 seconds. In terms of fuel consumption, the Toyota Avensis engine is quite economical. In the city, consumption is 5.1 liters, outside the city - 3.6 liters (station wagon 3.7 liters), and in the combined cycle, diesel consumption is 4.2 liters. CO2 emissions are 108 g/km. The unit will be available for Toyota Avensis Entry, Mid, Mid+ trim levels.

The latest version of the Toyota Avensis engine is a 2 liter diesel engine. The power of the unit is 143 hp, with a maximum torque of 320 Nm. As with the previous diesel engine, this engine will only be equipped with a manual transmission. The maximum speed of Toyota Avensis in this configuration is 200 km/h. The sedan can accelerate to the first hundred in 9.5 seconds, and the Toyota Avensis station wagon in 9.8 seconds. Fuel consumption for a sedan (station wagon) in the city is 5.1 l, outside the city - 3.8 l (4 l), in the combined cycle - 4.5 l (4.6 l). This engine will be available in Mid, Mid+ and Premium trim levels.

If we take the 2003 generation of Toyota Avensis, then in the same configuration the engine could produce from 116 to 147 hp. It would be loud to say that the new engines have become more powerful. But they also did not lose the quality of their work. In general, the technical characteristics of the Toyota Avensis 2016 are not bad enough, but I still wanted improvement, looking at the technologies of other cars.

Safety Toyota Avensis 2016

The safety of the new generation Toyota Avensis, even in the basic configuration, is not bad enough. The basic set includes 7 airbags. In front for the driver and passenger, there is another airbag in the driver’s knee area and four airbags around the perimeter of the Toyota Avensis to protect passengers from side impacts.

The basic configuration of Toyota Avensis 2016 is equipped with:

  • collision avoidance system;
  • braking assistant;
  • Cruise control;
  • Toyota Avensis stabilization system;
  • lane monitoring;
  • tire pressure monitoring;
  • immobilizer;
  • Downhill assist.
There were also various light and rain sensors on board the Toyota Avensis. Starting with the basic configuration, a pedestrian recognition system will be installed, alerting the driver in the dark. Also included in the basic package of the Toyota Avensis is the SmartKey keyless entry system, with which you can remotely warm up, start or turn off the car.

Toyota Avensis Mid+ and Premium trim levels are equipped with:

  • adaptive cruise control;
  • Rear View Camera;
  • parking assistant.
An assistant for driving a vehicle with a trailer and adaptive front optics (Premium equipment) will also be installed. The blind spot monitoring system will help prevent your Toyota Avensis from colliding with a car behind or to the side. As before, when purchasing a Toyota Avensis, the buyer can choose additional options and safety systems.

Options and price of Toyota Avensis

New Toyota Avensis are immediately divided by body type, and this is where the price will start. What the maximum price will be will depend on the desire and taste of the buyer.

The Toyota Avensis sedan configuration will cost from:

  • Toyota Avensis Entry from 28,340 euros;
  • Mid from 28995 euros;
  • Toyota Avensis Mid Navi from 30,635 euros;
  • Mid + will cost from 31,605 euros;
  • The top-end configuration of the Toyota Avensis Premium sedan will cost from 33,075 euros.
The Toyota Avensis station wagon package will cost from:
  • Toyota Avensis Entry from 30,040 euros;
  • Mid from 32335 euros;
  • Avensis Mid+ from 33,450 euros;
  • The top-end trim of the Toyota Avensis Premium sedan will cost from 34,775 euros.

Conclusion about the new Toyota Avensis

The first Toyota Avensis cars were introduced back in 1997, then the first generation was available in three body styles: sedan, liftback and station wagon. There were three petrol and two turbodiesel engines available to choose from. The appearance of the Toyota Avensis had rounded shapes.

The second generation Toyota Avensis 2003 started production in 2003 and was produced until 2007-2008. The body type remained sedan and station wagon. Three petrol and one diesel engines were available for the Toyota Avensis.

The third generation of Toyota Avensis started in 2007 and lasted until 2014. Externally, the model acquired new optics, body shapes and became strict compared to the previous generation. In terms of body type, the Avensis station wagon and sedan were offered; the liftback was finally discontinued. The list of Toyota Avensis engines was removed from the 2.4 liter petrol engine, but was replenished with a modernized 1.6 liter petrol engine and a new 1.8 liter engine. and 2 l. Diesel engines of 2 liters and 2.2 liters remain the same.

The fourth generation of Toyota Avensis, which was written about above, received quite good technical characteristics and a list of engines. As manufacturer Toyota assures, the Avensis model will still be discontinued, but still the latest generation has attracted many buyers. Toyota Avensis front optics, body style and equipment are what many buyers exchanged the old generation for a new one for.

The popularity of the model rests on the unlimited trust in Toyota quality. And Avensis almost does not disappoint customers' expectations.

Of course, the model has a strong trump card - ride comfort. Like many models of the brand, in terms of smoothness and sound insulation, it gives the impression of a more expensive car of a higher class. And yet the main reason for its popularity is the magic of the Toyota emblem.

Story

  • 1997-2003 The first generation was produced.
  • 03.2003 The second generation Avensis debuts at the Geneva Motor Show.
  • 08.2004 New 2.4 liter petrol engine.
  • 03.2005 The installation of two turbodiesel engines with a volume of 2.2 liters and a power of 150 and 177 hp has begun. With.
  • 06.2007 Restyling.
  • 09.2008 The next, third generation of Toyota Avensis is presented at the Paris Motor Show.

The second generation of Toyota Avensis started in 2003: production of the model was established in the UK, from where the car was imported to other markets, including Japanese.

Like its predecessor, the range of modifications of the Toyota Avensis II includes a sedan, station wagon and liftback. Only sedans were officially sold in Ukraine. A year before the end of production (in 2007), the model was restyled, but the changes were so insignificant that only experts can determine which version it is: for example, by the radiator grille - in older versions its bottom is flat, by the “foglights” in the front bumper - they are rectangular and the rear lights - their protective cap is completely red.

Body

Even the first production cars have no problems with paintwork or body corrosion yet. But like all other Toyota models, aggressive road salt causes the exterior chrome trim to become cloudy and peel off.

In addition, the Avensis traditionally fogs up the headlights, and some cars fog up the taillights.

Salon

The model is distinguished by good passive safety - according to the results of EuroNCAP crash tests in 2003, it won a maximum of 5 stars. Even in the basic Technical version there are 9 airbags. By the way, Avensis became the first model in its class equipped with a knee airbag for the driver.

Avensis is also attracted by its good level of equipment. So, even the basic versions are stuffed at the level of a car of a higher class: there is a rain and light sensor, ABS systems, directional stability (VSC), traction control (TRC), immobilizer, central locking, electric windows and mirrors, multifunction steering wheel, branded radio, dual-zone climate control -control, optitronic instrument panel, steering wheel adjustable in two directions, power steering.

There has been only one specific problem with electrical equipment so far. The retractable cup holder is poorly placed above the factory radio, which is why the radio sometimes floods.

At first, the seat heating elements also failed, but on most cars this problem has already been resolved under warranty.

Engines

If you choose by characteristics, even the basic 1.8-liter engine with 129 horsepower should be considered sufficient. This is one of the few engines of this size that can even cope with an automatic transmission in a middle-class car.

Although the two-liter 147-horsepower engine is, naturally, even better. In 2004, a year after the start of production, a 163-horsepower “two and four” appeared. It is combined only with a five-speed automatic transmission and performs noticeably better than its two-liter brother.

From a reliability point of view, almost all of these engines could be called ideal. There are no serious malfunctions characteristic of them. The timing drive for all is “eternal” chain, and although the valves are adjusted by selecting the thickness of the pushers, in fact they do not require adjustment until at least 200 thousand km.

Even engines with direct injection of the D4 family (volume 2.0 and 2.4 liters) did not live up to the initial fears. If you do maintenance on time, change spark plugs and preventively wash injectors with an air flow meter, they drive and drive - they won’t break down. The only peculiarity is that they operate harshly, with increased vibrations at idle. But this is precisely the feature.

Alas, the idyllic picture is spoiled by the 1.8-liter ZZ series engine. Some batches of engines in this series suffered from increased oil consumption. Usually “Toyota” units do not eat it at all, but here after 50 thousand km the consumption gradually increases to 1-2 l/1000 km. In this case, opening the engine reveals severe wear of the cylinder-piston group.

Only in April 2005 did they change the design of the rings and pistons, and also increase the volume of oil poured. If you buy an early production car that has driven more than 100,000 miles, has no blue smoke coming from the pipe, and has normal oil consumption, the problem is either already resolved under warranty or does not exist at all.

But vehicles with a mileage of 50-70 thousand km are at risk. Perhaps the owner felt the first signs of impending trouble and “resets” the car precisely for this reason.

If increased oil consumption is detected, the pistons with rings will have to be replaced, which rarely helps, or the short block - essentially an assembled engine, only without a head. The 1.8-liter engine should be diagnosed especially carefully before purchasing. It’s even better to buy a two-liter car - these are only a little more expensive.

In our conditions, spark plugs last an average of 20,000 km, but recently the quality of gasoline has been improving, and some people travel 30,000 km before being replaced. Every 40,000 km, it is recommended to preventively flush the injection nozzles, air flow meter and throttle valve block.

The drive belt changes depending on its condition - usually in the 80 thousand range.

Sometimes one of the oxygen sensors fails (there are 2 or 4 of them in total), and the “check engine” lights up on the panel. The faulty one is calculated and changed. On AZ series engines (2.0 and 2.4 l), there is a possibility of failure of the pressure regulator valve in the fuel rail. In this case, the motor “stops pulling” and the valve has to be replaced. In addition, road salt on any engine can cause the radiator of the cooling system to leak.

Transmission

Avensis is a front-wheel drive car equipped with a manual or automatic transmission. The Japanese automatic is not the most modern - it is 4-speed, but at the same time it is equipped with the ability to manually select gears - Tiptronic.

The automatic machines turned out to be the most problem-free. But in “mechanics” there have been cases of failure of shaft support bearings. The malfunction manifests itself as a characteristic hum while driving. In order not to run into a copy with a “rolled” manual transmission, it is recommended to carry out qualified diagnostics of the car.

In a manual transmission, it is advisable to change the oil after 40,000 km, in an automatic transmission - after 80,000 km. The clutch lasts an average of 150 thousand.

Chassis

There were some complaints about the chassis of early releases. In particular, the upper wishbones of the rear suspension were knocking. On 1.8-liter cars equipped with electric power steering, the steering column rattled on bumps. On 2-liter engines with power steering, rotation of the steering wheel could be accompanied by extraneous sounds.

In general, the chassis of the Avensis is surprisingly strong. If you take a car with a mileage of about 100,000 km, which has been driving on our roads all the time, in the foreseeable future you will only have to change the shock absorbers, stabilizer struts and one or two steering rods. Most expensive suspension and steering parts (levers, rack, etc.) last more than 150,000 km.

That is, the main expenses for repairing the chassis should fall on the share of the third owner, and the second one can get by with minimal investments. Such luxury is possible for very few cars.

The only things that are not very durable are brake pads and discs, which are enough for a maximum of two sets of pads. However, against the backdrop of the enviable survivability of all other details, this is quite acceptable. In addition, during maintenance it is necessary to check the mobility of the brake calipers and clean them of dirt. However, even if they start to jam, they can be revived with the help of a repair kit.

Prices for spare parts and service

Consumables and other small items are at the same level as classmates. More serious details, especially in the original, are expensive. You have to pay for quality and reliability, but no one has canceled the alternative license. The main thing is to figure out what you can and should take. In terms of service, we would not recommend “garage service stations”. The best option is specialized private stations, where Avensis is well known.

But the prices for used spare parts from salvage yards are steep:

  • headlight - $400
  • starter - $300
  • engine 2.0 - $2000

Bottom line

Reliability is not as unconditional as the previous generation, and technological progress inexorably affects the cost of maintenance. Nevertheless, by modern standards, Avensis is relatively problem-free. An important plus is that when buying this Toyota, you can be sure that in 2-3 years it will lose quite a bit in price, and you can sell the Avensis without any problems. The Toyota emblem will do the trick. It is best to avoid simple cars with a 1.8-liter engine (not to mention the 1.6-liter Avensis). The Avensis with a 2.0 liter engine paired with an automatic transmission seems ideal in terms of price/quality ratio.

Given the realities of today's market, Avensis falls into the following price range: from $13000 for options with considerable mileage and within $22000 the car is in excellent condition in recent years.

More reviews of business class cars:

The sedan and station wagon (traditionally called Verso) new Avensis represent the Japanese company Toyota in the European D-class or, as this niche is also called, business class. Unfortunately, the new Toyota Avensis is not officially sold in Russia in 2013-2014 and is not yet planned, but... cars can be purchased at car dealerships of “gray” dealers. In neighboring Ukraine, the model is officially offered for purchase, and the price is quite reasonable; the 2013 Avensis sedan with a 1.8-liter gasoline engine costs from 210,737 hryvnia (about 845 thousand rubles).

Having assessed the cost of the new Toyota Avensis, many Russian car enthusiasts decided to buy a larger and more solid sedan with a starting price of 969 thousand rubles. This pricing policy led to the refusal to supply the new Avensis to Russia, and even sales of more than three thousand cars a year did not become an argument in favor of the model.

The first thing I want to say when I see the updated Toyota Avensis is how modern, stylish, and simply great the sedan and station wagon look. The front part of the car body is like the muzzle of a predator with wide open eyes and nostrils, covered with its mouth in anticipation of a pounce. Let's return to automobile theremins to describe the exterior. Large headlights of a complex configuration with pointed beams fit harmoniously into the overall assertive appearance of the car. The compact slot of the false radiator grille with three horizontal crosspieces dressed in chrome is topped with the Toyota logo. The powerful body of the front bumper with bright aerodynamic elements carefully hugs and protects the car body from the front. A lower air intake with a massive roof in the form of a beam for placing a license plate and stylish foglights in chrome frames easily find a place on its surface. The U-shaped hood and rear-view mirrors on legs complete the picture of style and solidity.

The profile of the 3rd generation Toyota Avensis sedan and station wagon look no less attractive: the radii of the wheel arches with charismatic stampings, puffed surfaces of the wings and doors, large doorways, an ascending window sill line and a roof sloping towards the stern. The Avensis station wagon is absolutely devoid of utilitarianism and even looks sportier than a car with a classic four-door sedan body.

The rear of the cars is decorated with large and beautiful lampshades with all-LED filling; massive bumpers are complemented by fog lamps. A sedan with a compact trunk lid, a station wagon, of course, with a large tailgate topped with a spoiler.

Ten different enamel colors are used to paint the body: basic white; for metallic silver, light gray, dark gray, olive pearl, dark blue, dark blue pearl, steel pearl, burgundy pearl and black pearl you will have to pay extra.

  • The solid and harmonious appearance of the 2013 Toyota Avensis is complemented by 205/60 R16 tires on steel or alloy wheels of 16 radius; as an option, it is possible to order larger wheels with tires 215/55 R17 or 225/45 R18 and light alloy wheels, choice of wheels By the way, it’s simply huge.
  • The external overall dimensions of the 2013 Toyota Avensis sedan (Verso station wagon) are: 4710 mm (4780 mm) long, 1810 mm wide, 1480 mm high, 2700 mm wheelbase, front and rear wheel tracks are 1560 mm, 140 mm ground clearance (clearance).
  • The drag coefficient of the sedan body is 0.28 Cx, the station wagon body is 0.29 Cx, the curb weight, depending on the level of equipment, is from 1375 to 1445 kg.

The interior of the Japanese business class representative is greeted with high-quality finishing materials, neat assembly, and is generally very comfortable even despite the conservative design of the front panel and center console. The optimal radius of the multifunction steering wheel with music and telephone control buttons, the rim is trimmed with combined leather, the steering column is adjustable in height and depth. Optitron instrument panel with adjustable white backlighting and large multifunctional on-board computer display. The center console houses an audio system (radio, CD, MP3, WMA, connectors for iPod and USB, 6 speakers, Bluetooth), a control unit for air conditioning or dual-zone climate control. In rich versions or as additional equipment, a 6.1-inch color touch screen Toyota Touch multimedia system (music, rear view camera, navigation) will appear.

The first row seats with bright lateral support and step-by-step heating provide a comfortable and convenient position for the driver and passenger; a range of adjustment ranges allows people over 190 cm tall to sit correctly. The driver's seat is vertically adjustable and has electric lumbar support. The controls are located traditionally, in the right places and it takes a minimum of time to get used to.

In the second row, three passengers are provided with optimal space for comfortable accommodation. There is no excess space, but the knees do not reach the backs of the front seats, the split backrest has the correct, comfortable angle of inclination, and the top of the head does not support the ceiling.

The interior, as we said above, is very cozy, and most importantly, high-quality and presentable, despite the presence of fabric upholstery of the seats. If desired, you can order a leather interior - combined leather and Alcantara, as well as Bi-Xenon with adaptive light, parking sensors and a lot of other accessories.

The new Avensis boasts electrically folding heated exterior mirrors, cruise control, a front armrest with a cover, ignition switch illumination, a rain sensor, ABS with EBD and BA, TRC, VSC with stability control, electric power steering, five airbags including a knee airbag. driver, electric drive for opening the gas tank flap, protective side curtains at the front and rear, a body made with extensive use of high-strength steel.

The trunk of the new Avensis sedan is capable of accommodating 509 liters of cargo with passengers in the rear seats; if necessary, the split backrest is lowered forward, increasing the trunk volume by almost three times. The luggage compartment of the new Avensis Verso station wagon, even with a full passenger compartment, can accommodate 543 liters, and with the second row seats folded, all 1609 liters.

Specifications new Toyota Avensis 2013-2014: the car is built on a front-wheel drive platform, fully independent suspension with MacPherson struts at the front and a multi-link at the rear (two levers, a longitudinal beam and an anti-roll bar), disc brakes, electromechanical handbrake, electric power steering.
The car is available in Ukraine and Russia with one gasoline engine.

  • Four-cylinder 1.8-liter (147 hp 180 Nm) with 6 manual transmission (CVT 7 gears).

The tandem of the engine and gearbox allows it to accelerate to a maximum speed of 200 mph, dynamics up to 100 mph in 9.4 (10.4) seconds. Fuel consumption declared by the manufacturer ranges from 5.4 liters on the highway to 8.6 liters in urban conditions; in the combined cycle the engine requires at least 6.5 (6.6) liters of gasoline.
In Europe, the choice of engines is wider and consists of three gasoline engines and the same number of diesel engines.
Gasoline:

  • 1.6-liter (132 hp), 1.8-liter (147 hp) and 2.0-liter (152 hp).
  • 2.0-liter D-4D (124 hp) and mixed fuel consumption of only 4.5-4.6 liters;
  • 2.2-liter D-4D (150 hp) and 2.2-liter D-CAT (177 hp).

Test Drive The new 2013 Toyota Avensis makes it clear from the first minutes behind the wheel that the car was originally created and modernized exclusively for European motorists and roads. The rigid, well-assembled suspension behaves perfectly on a high-speed straight line and in fast turns, but... if there is a high-quality surface under the wheels. The presence of chipped asphalt and even miniature-sized holes will force you to slow down, only for the reason that the chassis transmits all the nuances of the road surface to the body and interior with a loud roar; even excellent sound insulation cannot save you. Turning a blind eye to the stiff suspension, we can summarize that the car is obedient, stable and at the same time boring. The engine is strangled to meet environmental standards; even with a 6-speed manual transmission, the car demonstrates sluggish dynamics (about 10 seconds), to say nothing of the CVT. Having carefully examined the restyled 3rd generation Toyota Avensis, we come to the conclusion that yes, it is better to buy a new Toyota Camry.

To replace the popular Carina E, the Toyota Avensis appeared in 1997 in Derbyshire (Great Britain) at the enterprise of the Japanese manufacturer. This model had a completely European appearance. Its length was reduced by 80 millimeters. The car has attractive aerodynamics for this class. The drag coefficient was 0.28.

Three things made the car popular:

  • excellent build quality;
  • modern design;
  • excellent level of comfort in the cabin.

ATTENTION! A completely simple way to reduce fuel consumption has been found! Don't believe me? An auto mechanic with 15 years of experience also didn’t believe it until he tried it. And now he saves 35,000 rubles a year on gasoline!

Toyota Avensis engines met the requirements of the time. The car was launched on the market as a more current model than the Carina E and Corona. The series quickly proved its success in Europe. For some time, this brand has been improving its technology, efficiency and power indicators, as well as size during production. Soon it was able to compete with famous rivals (Ford Mondeo, Skoda Superb, Mazda 6, Opel / Vauxhall Insignia, Citroen C5, Volkswagen Passat, Peugeot 508 and others).

The new product has become available to customers in the following body styles:

  • station wagon;
  • four-door sedan;
  • five-door liftback.

In the Japanese market, the Avensis brand is a large sedan, sold through dealerships of the corporation. It is not sold in North America, but Toyota's "T" platform is shared across several models.

First generation

Toyota Avensis 2002

The first generation of the new model T210/220 rolled off the factory assembly line from 1997 to 2003. The concern presented a car under the brand name Avensis. Compared to the predecessors of the Carina E brand, the common parts of the vehicles remained the body and the engine. The new product was produced at the Burnaston plant. At the same time, a five-door passenger car began to be produced here.

Even from the start, Avensis was given a choice of 3 gasoline engines with a volume of 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 liters or a 2.0 liter turbodiesel.

Toyota Avensis engines were in no way inferior to other cars in their class. There were three types of bodies: sedan, hatchback and station wagon, which was essentially a version for the Japanese market of the 2nd generation Toyota Caldina.

The entire line was distinguished by excellent assembly, impeccable reliability, a comfortable and spacious interior, a smooth ride, and numerous additional equipment. The model underwent a certain restyling at the very beginning of the third millennium. Valve timing adjustment systems were installed on the engines.

Satellite navigation has become a standard option in all car brands. The line was complemented by the Avensis SR sports car, equipped with a two-liter engine, sports suspension, and a tuning package. However, sales of first-generation passenger cars left much to be desired.

  1. The list of motors, their volume and power is as follows:
  2. 4A-FE (1.6 liters, 109 horsepower);
  3. 7A-FE (1.8 liters, 109 horsepower);
  4. 3S-FE (2.0 liters, 126 horsepower);
  5. 3ZZ-FE VVT-i (1.6 liters, 109 horsepower);
  6. 1ZZ-FE VVT-i (1.8 liters, 127 horsepower);
  7. 1CD-FTV D-4D (2.0 liters, 109 horsepower);
  8. 1AZ-FSE D4 VVT-i (2.0 liters, 148 horsepower);

The length of the car was 4600 mm, width - 1710, height - 1500 mm. All this with a wheelbase of 2630 mm.

The large MPV-class Avensis Verso, which appeared on the market in 2001, could accommodate seven passengers. It was equipped with an exclusive 2.0 liter engine option. Its platform anticipated the second generation cars. In Australia, this model was simply called Avensis, and it was awarded the status of the best passenger car among those intended for transporting passengers. No other options were available here.

Second generation

Toyota Avensis 2005

Representatives of the second generation T250 were produced by the concern from 2003 to 2008. The service life of the Toyota Avensis engine has increased significantly, and the general format of the line has also changed. Improvements affected the visual appeal of the car and driver assistance systems. The Avensis T250 brand was created in Toyota's design studio, located in France. She was left with 3 options for a gasoline engine with a volume of 1.6 liters, 1.8 liters, 2.0 liters and a turbodiesel with a two-liter volume. A 2.4 liter engine equipped with four cylinders was added to the line.

The T250 was the first Avensis to be exported to the Land of the Rising Sun. After the discontinuation of the Camry Wagon line, the Avensis Wagon passenger car (1.8l and 2.0l engine) began to be exported to New Zealand. In England, the T250 with a 1.6-liter engine was not available for sale.

The competition for European Car of the Year 2004 ended with the Toyota Avensis being knocked out of the top three. But in Ireland in the same year, the Japanese model was recognized as the best and was awarded the Semperit prize. Many considered it the best family car. In Switzerland, in 2005, they abandoned further production of the Toyota Camry. The Avensis passenger car has become the largest sedan of the Japanese corporation, intended for sale in Europe.

In England, for example, the car went on the market in the following trim levels: TR, T180, T Spirit, T4, X-TS, T3-S, T2. A special version called the Color Collection was based on the T2 configuration. In Ireland, the car was offered to customers in 5 trim levels: Sol, Aura, Luna, Terra, Strata.

From the very beginning, the Avensis was equipped with a D-4D diesel engine, equipped with a power of 115 horsepower. Then it was supplemented with a 2.2 liter D-4D engine and the following power indicators:

  • 177 horsepower (2AD-FHV);

New versions of the engine marked the abandonment of the previous emblems on the trunk lid and front fenders. In Japan, the car is sold under the designations 2.4 Qi, Li 2.0, 2.0 Xi. Only the base 2.0 Xi model comes with four-wheel drive.

Second generation Avensis station wagon

The Avensis is the first car in the Land of the Rising Sun to receive all possible prestigious stars in the crash test rating. It was held in 2003 by the famous organization Euro NCAP. The car received a total of thirty-four points - this was the maximum possible result. In Europe, she became the first owner of knee airbags. The engine on the Avensis was rated highly.

The improved Toyota Avensis brand appeared on the market in mid-2006. The changes affected the front bumper, radiator grilles, turn signals, and an audio system that plays MP3, ASL, and WMA tunes. The materials for the seats and interior have been improved. A computer display with many functions and compatible with the navigation system was inserted into the optitron instrument panel. The front seats can now be adjusted in height.

Specifications have also been updated. Manufacturers installed a new D-4D engine with a power of 124 hp, complete with a six-speed manual transmission.

Thus, harmful emissions and fuel consumption were reduced.

  1. The second generation was equipped with the following engines:
  2. 1AD-FTV D-4D (2.0 l, 125 hp);
  3. 2AD-FTV D-4D (2.2 l, 148 hp);
  4. 3ZZ-FE VVT-i (1.6 l, 109 hp);
  5. 1ZZ-FE VVT-i (1.8 l, 127 hp);
  6. 1AZ-FSE VVT-i (2.0 l, 148 hp);

2AZ-FSE VVT-i (2.4 l, 161 hp).

The length of the car is 4715 mm, width – 1760, height – 1525 mm. The wheelbase was 2700 millimeters.

Third generation

Toyota Avensis 2010

In the main configuration, the car has HID (bi-xenon) headlights, cruise control for adaptation, and an AFS lighting system. Standard equipment also means 7 airbags. Active front head restraints are designed in such a way that they can reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accident. There are brake lights that go off during emergency braking.

The course stability system, by distributing torque to the steering wheel, helps the owner control the car. The pre-crash safety system is an additional option with two subsystems. Safety for adult passengers, according to the conclusion of the Euro NCAP committee, is ninety percent.

The station wagon with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine is equipped with a continuously variable transmission and has been supplied to Japan since 2011. For Avensis passenger cars, there are 3 types of diesel engines, and the same number of gasoline engines. The new engines were more efficient than before. Toyota tested innovative gas distribution technology on engines belonging to the ZR series.

The engines are sold together with a manual transmission (six-speed). Those of them with a volume of 1.8 l, 2.0 l and running on gasoline are available to buyers with a continuously variable variator. The D-4D engine with a volume of 2.2 liters and a power of 150 horsepower is sold with a six-speed automatic transmission. Toyota Avensis models are good; Which engine is better can be found out by comparing them in terms of power and volume.

  1. 1AD-FTV D-4D (2.0 l, 126 hp);
  2. 2AD-FTV D-4D (2.2 l, 150 hp);
  3. 2AD-FHV D-4D (2.2 l, 177 hp);
  4. 1ZR-FAE (1.6 l, 132 hp);
  5. 2ZR-FAE (1.8 l, 147 hp);
  6. 3ZR-FAE (2.0 l, 152 hp).

With a wheelbase of 2700 mm, the length of the car is 4765, width – 1810, and height – 1480 millimeters. The most significant drawback of the engines on the Toyota Avensis is their disposability. In practice, this is expressed in the establishment of only one repair size for the crankshaft of the 1ZZ-FE engine (Japanese production only). It is impossible to overhaul the cylinder piston block, as well as replace the liners.

Children's sores Toyota Avensis of the second generation (2003-2006, restyling 2006-2008).

It's no secret that business class sedans are very popular in Russia. But Toyota doesn't think so. Recently, official deliveries of the Avensis model to the Russian Federation have been stopped. It is understandable why to sell two identical D-class cars. Avensis is assembled in the UK, and here in St. Petersburg, it turns out that the Camry is cheaper, more popular and sells much better than the Avensis (as it turned out, not in vain).

The car has excellent travel planning - which is a big plus for our roads. But dynamic performance suffers, even with the most powerful engine in the lineup. The model was produced in three “form factors”: sedan, station wagon, liftback.

Power units for the Russian market: 1.8 liters with a capacity of 130 horsepower (average fuel consumption - 7.5 liters per 100 km/way, acceleration to 100 km/h in 10.5 seconds), 2.0 liters with 150 horsepower (mixed consumption - 8.6 liters, up to 100 km/h - 9.5 sec) and 2.4 liters with output of 165 hp (city/highway consumption - 10 liters, 100 km/h in 9.2 s).

Three transmission options: a 4- or 5-speed torque converter automatic and a five-speed manual.

In the basic configuration: 4 el. window lifter, air conditioning, 7 airbags, el. mirror adjustment, stability control, heated seats, central locking.

In the “top” version: el. seat drive, leather interior, cruise control, el. folding heated mirrors, xenon headlights, dual-zone climate control, rain sensor.

Weaknesses of the Toyota Avensis II or what to look for when buying a used one.

low beam is dim - headlight reflectors burn out (usually xenon) - cover the reflector with a special film

— install restored ones

— reflectors from Honda Accord 2011 are suitable

- choose a Chinese equivalent

rust on the “edge” of the windshield and roof clean, tint, treat with casting lubricant
water in the rear lights - the gasket between the light and the body is “cold” treat the gasket with sealant or install a new one

Transmission

The left wheel drive “bursts” (rots under the “damper”), symptoms are a characteristic click, the speed increases, the car does not move (mostly at 1.8 liters) - if the drive is not “eaten” - clean, paint and lubricate it with Movil, check it every six months

Select a drive (when choosing: take into account the number of “teeth”, length, diameter)

- put Chinese

Engine

unreliable starter bulkhead - usually a Bendix (you can try washing it) or brushes
rustling and crackling under the hood - drive belt tensioner, the reason is the tensioner hydraulics or rollers — for 2.0 and 2.4 l — install a tensioner with a spring from Camry V40 (with a slight modification of the mounting bolt)

— 1.8 l – machine bushings from resin to attach the tensioner or install an analogue from BMW

— replace the rollers

1.8 l - “eats oil” - a design defect, was corrected in restyling major overhaul, with installation of restyled pistons, rings, caps, sprockets
2.0 and 2.4 - the temperature rises, the level of antifreeze decreases (check in the radiator) - overheating of the internal combustion engine due to the pulling out of the cylinder head “studs” (determined by antifreeze leaks on the block) — install “studs-futures” with block grinding

- replacement with a “contract” engine

Consider for purchase restyling from 10.2006

dull knock from the front - right (steering rack bushings are worn out) use "repair kit"
The air conditioner does not work - “weak” compressor install contract from Toyota Wish
vibration at idle — revision of engine mounts

— fuel correction (check ignition coils, spark plugs, injectors, throttle)

Transmission

knocking, humming, crunching of the manual transmission (on the move) - short service life of the gearbox bearings replacement of bearings (closed type) of the secondary and primary shaft, to increase the service life - “open” the bearings
“hard gear shift” manual transmission – the gearbox cable is damaged pick up a contract rope

Electrics

ABS errors are on, TRC off - the ABS unit does not work repair (resolder) or install - after restyling, the unit has been modernized
“grinding” of climate control dampers disassemble the dampers, bend the contacts of the tracks, distribute the lubricant evenly

Brake system

The calipers rattle on uneven surfaces guide repair kit + grease for calipers (lubricate once a year)
The heater blows cold air from the front passenger side (HI mode) - the heater radiator is clogged - the best solution is to install a SAT substitute - try washing it (not much chance)
knocking “under the driver’s feet” (felt on the steering wheel) “development” of splines in the steering “cardan” (intermediate) - was
