How to remove the box. Installing an automatic transmission

How to remove the box. Installing an automatic transmission

First of all, if possible, put the car in the pit and enlist the help of another person, because removing the box alone is extremely problematic, although it is possible. However, here we will present a way to remove a gearbox without a hole. Decide whether you need to drain the oil or not, and before that, remove the starter and battery - now you can proceed to the gearbox itself.

  1. Initially, you should disconnect the clutch cable. There is nothing complicated here, just loosen the first and second nuts and easily remove it.
  2. Then you should begin to unscrew the fastening nut. Once it is unscrewed, it is time to remove the cable from the bracket on the gearbox.
  3. Squeezing the spring clips, disconnect the wires from the speed sensor.
  4. Then you should unscrew the two bolts that secure the gearbox to the engine and one bolt, the last one that secures the ignition bracket.
  5. Then we remove the jet rod by unscrewing the fastening bolts and loosening the clamp, after which we simply pull it back.
  6. Next, it is important to remove the left wheel drive - it is not necessary to touch the right one.
  7. Then we unscrew all the bolts on the steering knuckle, on the lower right gearbox mount, unscrew the bracket nut, the clutch housing bolts and the lower left mount bolt.
  8. After this, you can hang the engine and secure it properly.
  9. Then we will see the outer fasteners - we also remove them.
  10. Then unscrew two more nuts on the rear engine mount.
  11. Now you can move the gearbox off the guide bushings and do not forget to hold it.
  12. By moving it as far as possible to the left side of the car, you can completely remove the gearbox from your VAZ-2110.

After the box is completely removed, you can carry out all the necessary manipulations on it: repairs, adjustments, replacement of parts, or even replace it with a new one. Assembly is carried out in reverse order. The main thing is not to forget to make adjustments.

The gearbox (Gearbox) is one of the most important components of a car. The driving characteristics of the car depend on it. Owners of domestic cars (classics) have it a little easier than other car enthusiasts; they can repair and maintain the transmission of their cars themselves. And for those who do not have experience in such work, we have prepared a special article that will help them in this “difficult matter.”

The procedure for removing the gearbox

So, having installed the car on a pit or overpass, let's get started. The first thing we do is remove the driveshaft.

Secondly, we remove some elements of the exhaust system (muffler, “pants”, etc.).

You can, of course, only disconnect the “pants” from the resonator, but if the work is carried out without assistants, it will not be particularly convenient.

The next step is to remove the gearbox working cylinder (it is also convenient to remove it from the pit).

The cylinder can be easily unscrewed with a 13mm spanner; two bolts need to be unscrewed. The gap adjustment is not affected. The next step is the process of unscrewing the bolt securing the ground wire.

Having unscrewed the clutch slave cylinder and the ground wire, we move them to the side so that they do not interfere with us. There is no need to remove them completely, just secure them to the side. Then we remove the “chips” of the reversing light switch terminals.

All that remains is to disconnect the speedometer cable, which is attached to the gearbox.

Don’t forget about the clutch housing shield; it is fastened with four bolts (some have only two left).

After this, the lever itself is “pulled off” from the wings. To do this, pry off the nylon ring with some sharp object.

After removing the lever, rubber seals and nylon clamps will remain on the rocker; it is better to replace them with new ones, having previously purchased a repair kit for the rocker.

After completing the “upper” preparatory work, we go down into the pit again, we have to carry out the main part of the work - free the box from the main fastenings - these are four bolts that secure the gearbox bell to the engine (the first attachment point).

The lower bolts unscrew easily; we tear them off with a spanner. But the upper bolts are more “problematic”. To unscrew them, it is better to use a wrench with a head, or you will suffer with a regular cap, but it needs to be wound from the top.

Important! Before removing the gearbox, set the linkage to 5th gear. If the gearbox is 4-speed, then to the 3rd. Otherwise, it will be inconvenient to remove the gearbox.

Now we free the gearbox from the second mounting point, this is its rear support, the so-called “swallow”.

They are held on by 13mm nuts, which we pre-lubricate with WD-40, as they often turn sour and can be torn off.

After carrying out all these procedures, we carefully examine the “bell” of the box. We need this to make sure that we have disconnected all the wires and unscrewed the bolts and drives.

Advice! If there is engine protection, then it is advisable to lay a wooden block between it and the oil pan. This will help keep the motor in its original position, making it easier to attach the box to the motor in the future.

Now we proceed directly to removing the box. Having firmly grasped the gearbox housing with your hands and slightly lowered its rear part to remove the rocker, we move the box back, removing it from the splines.

A modern vehicle includes a lot of complex components, mechanisms and devices. During the operation of the car, they wear out and from time to time require repair or replacement. The gearbox is no exception, especially for domestic cars. Undoubtedly, the procedure for removing the gearbox is quite labor-intensive and takes a lot of time. Therefore, most car owners resort to the help of specialists. However, this activity is quite doable at home, which will allow you to save your money. This will be discussed in the article.

To remove and subsequently install the gearbox, you will need the following consumables and tools:

You will also need an assistant, since it is quite difficult to perform this operation on your own.

Preparatory work, what needs to be removed first to get to the gearbox, step by step

To get to the checkpoint, you must first provide access to the underbody of the vehicle, so it must be raised. To do this, you can drive the car onto an inspection groove, overpass, or lift it using a lift. Then we do the following:

  1. First, you need to dismantle the engine protection (mudguard), for which, using a socket wrench, unscrew the mudguard mounting bolts. Next we remove the protection.

  2. Then remove the engine compartment shield from the right side.

  3. After this, the oil should be drained from the gearbox. To ensure that the oil is drained efficiently, it is recommended to warm up the engine before draining, allowing it to run for several minutes. Then place a previously prepared container under the drain hole and unscrew the plug.

  4. When the waste liquid has drained completely, you need to clean the hole and plug from dirt, and then screw it back in.

  5. At the next stage, turn off the power to the car by disconnecting the negative terminal from the battery.

  6. Next, remove the air filter. To do this, you need to disconnect the air supply hoses, crankcase ventilation hoses, as well as the air flow sensor. Do not forget to remove the air filter housing, which is dismantled instead of the hose, sensor and throttle valve.

  7. At this stage, the starter should be removed from the car. First you need to unscrew the nut that secures the tip of the clutch wire, which connects the starter and the positive terminal of the battery. Then remove the tip from the contact bolt. Now we disconnect the traction relay control wire, unscrew the traction nuts, and then remove the starter.

Gearbox 2110, how to remove it correctly, step by step instructions

  1. It is necessary to disconnect the gearbox and the clutch cable release forks from the bracket, for which we pull out the clutch cable forks from the lever in the engine compartment. Next, you need to loosen the nut securing the cable sheath to the gearbox. We hold the shell and pull out the cable tip from the bracket.

  2. Now disconnect the wire connector from the reverse sensor and speed sensor.

  3. After this, you need to disconnect the jet rod, which is attached to the buffer using two nuts. When the nuts are unscrewed, it is necessary to remove the bracket and dismantle the rod.

  4. Next, disconnect the gear shift drive rod from the hinge.

  5. Then unscrew the fastening bolts on the clutch housing cover and remove the cover.

  6. The wheel drives can now be removed. To avoid problems during installation, you should install a wooden plug. We move it to the side or remove the right drive.

  7. Next, loosen the ball joint mounting bolts.

  8. Remove the lower crankcase cover.

  9. Unscrew the lower bolt securing the gearbox to the engine.

  10. Then we hang the power unit using the prepared support. We dismantle the left motor mount by unscrewing the fastening nut.

  11. After unscrewing the gearbox mounting bolts and nuts that secure the rear engine mount to the body, remove the rear mount.

  12. We insert a screwdriver between the clutch housing and the cylinder block, and slide the box off the guide bushings.

  13. We move the gearbox as far back as possible, rocking it, and then dismantle it.

Gearbox 2110, how to install the gearbox after repair

The gearbox should be installed in the reverse order of removal. As you can see, the work is not easy and time-consuming, but it is quite possible to do it yourself, following exactly the instructions described above.

Pro tips, driver actions after gearbox repair

In order for the gearbox to serve for a long time, it is necessary to operate it correctly, in particular:

It is worth noting that when the first signs of a gearbox malfunction are detected, the breakdown should be diagnosed as quickly as possible and then repaired or replaced. It is not recommended to operate the vehicle if the gearbox is faulty.

When my car already had high mileage, since I worked in a taxi service, the gearbox began to work poorly over time. One fine day, the gears stopped turning on altogether and it was decided to replace the old gearbox with a new one. Today I will tell you how to properly remove the gearbox on a VAZ 21099 with your own hands.

Before you begin removing the transmission from the car, I recommend disconnecting the wire from the negative terminal of the battery. Also, do not forget to drain the oil from the gearbox, see how to do this.

To make it more convenient for you, invite a friend to help with the repairs.

Removing the gearbox on a VAZ 21099

1. First of all, unscrew the mounting bolts and remove the crankcase protection.

2. Unscrew the bolt and disconnect the ground wire from the clutch housing.

3. Loosen the nuts on the end of the clutch cable.

4. Remove the cable end from the clutch lever.

5. Disconnect the block with the wire from the starter traction relay terminal.

19. Unscrew the three mounting bolts and remove the clutch housing shield.

20. Loosen the three bolts and nuts securing the clutch housing to the cylinder block.

21. Place suitable wooden support blocks on the wing flanges in the area of the front strut supports and install a beam on them to hang the engine. The beam must rest only on the wing flanges!

22. Attach the engine by the eye to the beam with a long bolt with a hook. You can also use strong rope or wire for this. (For ease of photographing, the hood has been removed).

Replacing a box is a fairly rare procedure that is very difficult to do alone. To remove the part, you will need the help of a second person, as well as various tools. The scope of further work depends on how exactly to remove the box on a VAZ-2109. Inaccurate dismantling will lead to additional damage to the elements inside the gearbox and complete failure of the part.

What tool will be needed to remove

It is better to remove the box in a garage with a pit or on an overpass. If it is not possible to use a pit, then you will need a jack and stands to fix the car at a certain height. It will be quite difficult to do without an assistant, so it is better to agree with a person in advance.

You will also need:

  • a set of keys;
  • mount;
  • rags;
  • container for draining oil (at least 5 liters).

It is better to prepare all the tools in advance. In addition to wrenches, you will also use spanners. The rotating head will make removing the gearbox easier and simpler. It is also necessary to secure the car in a certain way so that there is access to the protection casing from below.

Stages of removing the gearbox on a VAZ-2109

It is worth considering that the VAZ-2109 box weighs 27 kg and it is better to prepare a winch in advance to fix the part. Removal of the box should be carried out in a well-lit room, since some elements are quite small, and the dirt that adheres to the box during operation makes them almost invisible. Let's start dismantling the gearbox.

First of all, you need to disconnect the negative terminal on the battery.

It is better not to refill the oil afterwards, as metal particles and contaminated liquid can damage the new part. Even if the lubricant was filled several hundred kilometers before replacing the part, you should not skimp and use old oil.

After this, we proceed to the next steps:

  1. Removing the mudguard and crankcase protection, if equipped.
  2. Removing drive and wheel nuts. It is better to remove all 4 wheels, but if you are not sure about the reliable position of the car, then 2 wheels can be left. It is also necessary to raise the engine and securely fix it using stands made of wood, stone or metal.
  3. You need to remove the clutch and speedometer cable.
  4. At the next stage, it is better to remove the starter. It is preferable to completely dismantle the starter, since removing only the wires will make installing the part more difficult. The starter can be secured to adjacent wires, so the part will not be lost and will be securely fixed.
  5. Removing the ground wire.
  6. The bolts that secure the ball joints to the knuckle are unscrewed.
  7. The longitudinal brace on the left side of the vehicle must be removed.

In order to pull the drives out of the gearbox, you will need the help of a second person. The assistant needs to tighten the internal grenade using a pry bar, and the first person at this time must sharply pull the wheel. This method saves time on removing drives. Since after removing the drives, the differential may rotate in the box, it is better to insert an old grenade or chopstick in place of the dismantled part.

  1. You need to unscrew the central nuts of the drives and remove them.
  2. The next step will require removing the connector for the reverse sensor.
  3. The flywheel protection is unscrewed from the gearbox.
  4. Having remembered the location of the shift lever, you need to remove it.

It is necessary to unscrew the bolts that secure the VAZ-2109 gearbox to the engine. The motor must be securely fixed, since when the gearbox is removed, its fastening is also weakened.

After holding the manual transmission, you need to manually remove the cushions, supports and fasteners.

At the next stage, you need to carefully move the box away from the engine together with an assistant. This is done so that the input shaft is disconnected and its petals are not deformed. After the box is disconnected from everything, it must be removed from under the hood. This completes the dismantling of the part.

On average, dismantling the box takes 20 minutes. Even if a person is doing this for the first time, the whole process will take no more than half an hour. It is important to have the necessary keys and an assistant at hand who can provide physical assistance. When a part is completely replaced, you don’t have to worry about maintaining the working condition of the gearbox and don’t worry about accidentally dropping the device after removal.

If the part is to be rebuilt and reinstalled, it is recommended to place a clean rag under the manual transmission.

Transmission repair options without removal

It is not always necessary to completely replace the gearbox, so sometimes it is advisable to carry out repairs without removing the gearbox. Replacing a disk or basket can be done with the box not removed, but it must be taken into account that in this case the time for repair work can increase by 1.5 - 2 times. In order to replace parts, you need to unscrew the two upper bolts and instead screw in long studs that will act as an axis. Using the gearbox studs, you can move it away from the engine and perform all the necessary manipulations.
