The technical service manual for any modern Ford car states that the engine can only run on synthetics. In recent years, only 5W-30 synthetic motor oil was allowed.
When improved turbocharged engines such as EcoBoost appeared, characterized by low fuel consumption and enormous power, it became necessary to develop a new lubricant for them. As a result, an energy-saving alternative was created - 5W20 synthetics.
Properties of 5W-20
It differs from analogues in its low high-temperature viscosity. The advantages include:
- Easy start;
- Reduced fuel consumption;
- Increasing the wear resistance of elements of the propulsion system, especially in winter.
However, the use of 5W-20 synthetic oil is not allowed in every car model. The label must indicate certain tolerance values corresponding to older Ford models - WSS-M2C913-A/B/C.
The latest specification, WSS-M2C948-B, covers all of Ford's 5W-20 lubricant requirements. It is applicable only in gasoline installations. The manufacturer considers the previous composition 5W-30 to be the most suitable for a diesel power unit. However, it must meet the conditions of WSS-M2C913-D.
ACEA A5,B5 grease may only be filled in special cases. It has several positive qualities: it reduces friction, saves fuel, and is characterized by high thermal-oxidative resistance. Can be used for a long time without replacement. Suitable for use with diesel or high octane fuel.
Analogs
For many years, the Castrol concern, together with Ford technologists, has been developing the latest products for the power plants of Ford Focus cars. Castrol produces motor oils that Ford advises to use in its engines. In particular, this is Castrol Magnatec:
- A5 5W-30,
- E 5W-20 is a professional oil for high-octane fuel.
You can only purchase such joint products at the official center. The popular synthetic Ford Formula F is no longer sold only through authorized dealerships. Now it is sold in regular car stores.
How can I replace 5W-20?
Today, many manufacturers produce motor oils that can fully replace the latest 5W-20 oil. Their list is quite extensive:

The most optimal tolerances for a Ford car are:
- WSS-M2C948-B – for gasoline engines;
- WSS-M2C913-D – for diesel internal combustion engines.
The ideal option is the WSS-M2C913-C approval. In case of extreme conditions, it is allowed to use oil whose properties meet the requirements of the international standard ACEA A5, B5.
100% synthetic 5W-20 coupled with 5W-40 can successfully replace the compounds produced by well-known global manufacturers: Shell, Mobil, Total and others.
Regulations for changing motor oils for the second generation Ford Focus are, as a rule, revised in the direction of reducing mileage. Therefore, the optimal period between engine lubricant changes will be 7–8 thousand km. Conveyor oil is produced by the French corporation Elf, and the manufacturer does not recommend changing the lubricant in the engine before the first scheduled maintenance. This is explained by the special characteristics of semi-synthetic oil, which contribute to high-quality engine running-in.
Counterfeits Ford Formula F 5W-30
The fake is distinguished by unclear text and a dimensional structure on the side of the container.
D0 2009
For engines assembled before 2009, when replacing old lubricant with Ford Formula F 5W-30, there is no need to use any special flushes or other liquids; the replacement technology also does not change for topping up old engines with Ford Formula E 5W-30 oil. You can use the new Formula F oil.
In fact, it is not at all necessary to use Ford Formula F 5W-30. It is enough that the selected oil meets Ford standards Ford WSS-М2С913-A and WSS-М2С913-В, especially since, for obvious reasons, Ford does not produce any oils and uses products from third-party manufacturers.
What oil is better to fill in the Ford Focus 2 engine
If you don’t want to experiment with semi-synthetics recommended by Ford, you can safely try using oil from the American manufacturer Motorcraft full synthetic 5W-30 S API SN.
This is a high quality synthetic product that has Ford approvals. Moreover, the price of this oil is one and a half times lower than popular European brands.
How much to fill?

For a two-liter Ford Focus engine, at least 4.5 liters will be needed.
Among European brands, Castrol Edge 5W-40 Fully Synthetic and Castrol Magnatec 5w-30 are often used, but they are significantly more expensive. There are also more budget series - Motul 5w-30 913C. They are asking 2.5 thousand for 5 liters.

In short, the main indicators of the applicability of motor oils for the second generation Ford Focu remain:

For 1.4 and 1.6 liter engines, the branded Ford filter will have catalog number 1714387-1883037, but in addition to it you can use analogues from Suzuki with catalog number 16510-61AR0, Bosch filters 0 986 452 019, Bosch 0 986 452 044, Fram PH3614, as well as the German Mann W 610/1 filters have a good reputation.

2. Ford Formula S/SD 5w40 oil. This product was created to “help” Formula 5W30. It has a synthetic composition and does not fade under high loads and high mileage. An excellent choice for gasoline and diesel engines.
3.Ford Castrol 5w20. We do not recommend pouring it into Focus 2. This oil is designed specifically for Ecoboost engines (with a turbine). Although official dealers put it into Focus, there is no point or benefit in this - it costs 30% more than the formula. Moreover, it forms a thinner protective oil film, because it is “energy-saving”. Definitely, there is no need to pour such oil!
4. Ford Castrol 5w30. A special product for new generation diesel engines and for Ford Focus ST. This oil has approvals for diesel and gasoline engines, but with priority for a diesel engine. There is no point in recommending it for the Ford Focus 2 - production of the Focus 2 ended (in 2011) a year before the start of production of this product (2012).
